The first owner of the Bruins was Charles Adams, who had a large hand in convincing the NHL to expand into the United States. He hired Art Ross as general manager and he stayed with the team for thirty years. Ross also came up with the nickname for the team, as Adams wanted a name which portrayed an untamed animal that showed agility, cunning and speed. He chose “Bruins” after the brown bear.
The team saw success early in their career. In 1927, they reached the Stanley Cup final but lost to the Ottawa Senators. They won their first Stanley Cup in 1929 by beating the New York Rangers. The Bruins set a winning record in the 1929 season, when they won 38 out of 44 games. This record still remains unbroken. They reached the Final again but lost to the Montreal Canadiens. In the 1930’s, the team had players like Babe Siebert, Dit Clapper, Eddie Shore and Cooney Weiland, who kept the team high in their division. They won their second Stanley Cup in 1939. After their third Stanley Cup win in 1941, the Bruins suffered a few unsuccessful years, as most players enlisted for World War II. In 1945, they made the Finals again but lost.
In 1951, Weston Adams, who was Charles Adams son had to sell the team to Walter A. Brown, as he was having some financial difficulties. The Bruins made the Finals in 1953, 1957 and 1958, but they lost each time to the Montreal Canadiens. In 1964, Weston Adams bought back the team and rebuilt the team. He drafted Bobby Orr in 1966 who would become one of the greatest players of the NHL. The team had great players like Ken Hodge, Derek Sanderson, Dallas Smith and John Mackenzie and was one of the top teams throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s.
The Bruins won the Stanley Cup again in 1970 after a gap of 29 years, by defeating the St. Louis Blues. That year, Bobby Orr won four awards, the James Norris Memorial Trophy, the Conn Smythe Trophy, the Hart Memorial Trophy, and the Art Ross Trophy. He is the only player to have won all four awards in a single season. The Bruins won the Stanley Cup once more in 1972, after which they haven’t any more till date.
The current team captain is Zdeno Chara and the head coach is Claude Julien. Jeremy Jacobs is the owner of the Boston Bruins. Their home arena is the TD Banknorth Garden and their team colors are black and gold. |
