After two seasons the team moved to Denver, Colorado and was named the Colorado Rockies. In 1982, the team moved yet again to NJ where it is based till date. They have been playing their home games at the Continental Airlines Arena. They will be moving to their new home arena next season which is still under construction, the Prudential Center in Newark.

The first few years of the team were not very successful even as they moved from Kansas City to Denver. In 1978 they made the playoffs for the first time but they lost to the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round. Their next few years were poor and there were talks of moving to NJ which finally materialized in 1982 when tycoon John McMullen bought the team. After a fan contest, the nickname Devils was chosen for the team after a legendary creature known as the Jersey Devil.

In the 1980’s the Devils had some young star players on the roster such as Kirk Muller, Pat Verbeek and John MacLean. With these players, the team started improving and finally in the 1987-88 season, they had their first winning record and made the playoffs for the second time. The Devils lost in the conference finals to the Boston Bruins.

In 1993, the Devils hired Jacques Lemaire as head coach. The team got their first 100 point season with players like Bobby Holik, Stephane Richer, Scott Stevens, Claude Lemieux, Martin Brodeur and John MacLean. They reached the Eastern Conference finals where they were beaten by Rangers. The next season, they reached the Conference finals again, this time facing the Philadelphia Flyers. They defeated the Flyers and carried on to the Stanley Cup Finals which they won by defeating the Detroit Red Wings. The next season they failed to even make the playoffs making it the first time in twenty six years that a defending champion did not make the playoffs.

In 2000, the Devils won the Stanley Cup for the second time by defeating the reigning champions Dallas Stars. Their third and last Stanley Cup so far came in 2003 when they defeated the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. It was the third cup for five Devils players. These were Martin Brodeur, Scott Niedermayer, Scott Stevens, Sergei Brylin and Ken Daneyko. In 2004, Jeffrey Vanderbeek took over as owner of the team. The mascot of the team is a seven foot tall devil known as NJ Devil. The current captain is Patrik Elias and head coach is Brent Sutter.
