They play their home games at the Madison Square Garden. The Rangers have been one of the most successful teams in the NHL. They have won a total of four Stanley Cups, their first being in the second season itself. Their team colors are Red, Blue and White.
Tex Rickard was the original owner of the Rangers and he wanted to name them the NY Giants but the press gave them the nickname “Tex’s Rangers” and so the team was named the New York Rangers. He got Conn Smythe who became owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the future to gather a team. He left the team in a year but the team he assembled proved to be a winner. In their first year, the team won the Atlantic Division title and made the playoffs but lost to the Boston Bruins. The second season saw the Rangers lifting the Stanley Cup by defeating the Montreal Maroons.
In 1932, the Rangers went on to win their second Stanley Cup after defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 1940, they faced the Toronto Maple Leafs again in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Rangers won the finals to take home their third Stanley Cup. After that, the Rangers could not keep up their winning record and became one of the less successful NHL teams for many years. In the late 1960’s, they made a comeback of sorts. They made the playoffs in 1967. They reached the Finals twice in the 1970’s. In 1972, they were beaten by the Boston Bruins and in 1979, they lost to the Montreal Canadiens.
The Rangers tasted success at the Stanley Cup Finals again after 54 long years in 1994. The team included players like Mark Messier, Adam Graves, Craig MacTavish, Brian Leetch, Glenn Anderson and Sergei Zubov. They faced the Vancouver Canucks and defeated them to lift the Cup for the fourth time in franchise history. This would be the last time they won the Stanley Cup till date. Mark Messier became the first captain to have led two teams to win the Stanley Cup, the other team being the Edmonton Oilers.
